Healthy Bones

Everyone wants to look good. In order to look good you need to take care of the inside as well. Today’s post is about STRONG HEALTHY BONES.

Postmenopausal can experience a significant amount of bone loss the first ten years after menopause. It is so important to eat well, take high quality supplements and do weight bearing exercises.

DIET

  • Eat a low-glycemic diet to avoid spiking your blood sugar. It is important to eat some protein and some fat with all meals to maintain normal blood sugar.
  • Gluten sensitivity might be a problem, I would avoid grains as well.
  • Eat plenty of vegetables and some fruit, (I love berries in my morning smoothies.)
  • Eat calcium-rich foods, nuts, organic or raw cheeses, salmon, dark green vegetables are wonderful. (Sardines with bones are great but personally I don’t enjoy them.)

Supplements

  • Multi-vitamin/Mineral Supplement
  • Calcium/Magnesium
  • Vitamin D (good to get you levels checked)
  • Fish oil
  • Probiotics
  • Digestive Enzyme
  • Fiber (drink lots of water)

It is so important to buy the best pharmaceutical grade supplements that you can. These are what my family and I take.  I highly recommend them! Your bones will thank you:)

Exercise

I can’t leave you without a workout video for strong healthy bones. Have fun with this one!

Macadamia Nuts

We have had a great first week at my new workouts! It feels great to be back at it with my friends! We are all on the journey to being Fit and Fabulous…Aging Optional except for Kate because she is pregnant and is having a beautiful Thanksgiving BABY!  She showed up this morning to workout with us!

Health Tip of the week!

EAT MORE FAT! Instead of reaching for the pretzels  have a few raw macadamia nuts. My dad traveled a lot when I was growing up. He would bring home little containers of macadamia nuts from the airlines, such a treat for me!

If you are having a piece of fruit have a few nuts along with it. Nuts lower the glycemic load of the fruit. It is so important to keep your blood sugar balanced so you can release the FAT!

Raw macadamia nuts are high in the same healthy fatty acid found in olive oil. They are full of essential minerals, vitamins and HEALTHY FATS! They are also delicious and loaded with calories. 203 calories in 10-12 nuts. I put a serving size in a pretty dish and try to limit myself to that.

Enjoy!

Enjoy!

I want to feel FABULOUS, VIBRANT and HEALTHY!

FABULOUS, VIBRANT AND HEALTHY! …that is the GOAL!

I have been doing a lot of soul searching the past 6 months. I hurt my back and had to take some time off, physical therapy etc. I have always been athletic which is a very ego-driven adventure. Working out and being Fit is very important to me and my ego.

Christa and I created OutdoorFit 7 years ago. It has been a great run. We taught and encouraged women to do things they never thought they could do. My friend Jane became an athlete in her 60’s. We changed lives, created winter warriors and had a great time doing it!

It is time for a change, A NEW BEGINNING! A few weeks ago at a workout I looked up and in class we had two 70 something, three 60 something, two women in their 50’s and a youngster who just turned 40! I thought this is AMAZING! Fit and Fabulous…Aging Optional!!

It is time to create a different workout. It will still be intense but perhaps for 12 minutes instead of 25 minutes. 60 burpees in a workout is very empowering but not necessary for your health and well being. How about 25 or so? It will include more stretching… flexibility is key for any age.

I have also been tweaking my diet. I know I can’t exercise my way out of a BAD DIET! I don’t want to be working out so hard. So I need to be more aware of what I am putting in my mouth. I want to feel FABULOUS, VIBRANT and HEALTHY.

My program is coming together and will begin in September. I am excited to be announcing the details soon. So please stay tuned.

For a sneak preview, I am having a Fit and Fabulous event Thursday evening in Red Bank. I would love to see you there. More details here and please RSVP.

Mary

Time For A Change!

I have been working on creating a new program for the fall and I am excited about it. It will be a new beginning! September is a good time for a new program, back to school time, turning 60 (WOW) etc. I have been looking at  my fitness and well being in a different way the past 6 months.

Here are some of the ideas and thoughts that I have been working with. Creativity and ideas have been flowing. I feel like I am on the right path and hope to inspire you as well!

  • Easy, Peasy
  • Rid of aches and pains or at least reduced.
  • Healthy Weight
  • Minimum amount of exercise that you need to stay in shape.
  • Can’t exercise your way out of a BAD DIET!
  • Laugh everyday!
  • A lovely cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of wine in the evening…just because:)

More Details to come!

If you are local please check out the Fit and Fabulous event page. Join me for a organic cup of coffee or organic wine depending on the time of day. Wear your sneakers  we will be having a mini workout to start the event!  Please RSVP!

Sausage Pizza and Ice Cream Sundaes!

Confessions of a health coach: Sunday night, we had an easy family dinner. Sausage pizza and ice cream sundaes for dessert! It has been awhile since I had a dinner like that. It was delicious, easy and everyone enjoyed it. Sunday morning, Tom and I went to Trader Joe’s to shop  and they were sampling peanut butter track ice cream with caramel sauce and cowboy bark! The young lady named Molly told me the cowboy bark was like CRACK! Once you open the bag, you are in trouble. I shared the whole bag with 7 people so we only had a small amount and ENJOYED IT THOROUGHLY! Bringing pleasure into my day!

You can’t bring pleasure like that in everyday! There are other healthier ways to happiness.I posted last week about bringing pleasure into my life and how it makes me nervous. I have found a simple way to laugh every day and have told so many people about it. SHARE THE JOY! I am watching Comedians in cars drinking coffee with Jerry Seinfeld. Have you seen it? It is the best. The episodes are about twenty minutes.

It is so important to laugh! Check it out! I loved the Sarah Jessica parker episode in the Country Squire. My dream car was in the Larry David episode.

Other Updates!

I also found a food tracker app “LOSE IT”. My husband and I will track for two months. It is a good thing to do together. A food journal keeps you on track and people that take the time to post lose more weight.

I am taking Fit and Fabulous on the road! If you are local I would love to see you at one of the FREE workshops. Details on the Fit & Fabulous Event page above.

It is a new day!

We are back from vacation and tomorrow it will be two months until the Big 60! Now is the time to make a few simple changes so I will be really Fit and Fabulous!!!

We spent the weekend at my sister Patty’s house. She took great care of us which was so nice. I noticed that she calmly makes her meals. I on the other hand feel agitated when cooking and I am eating while I am cooking and cleaning up.

A FEW SIMPLE CHANGES CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE~

  • I am no longer eating while cooking or cleaning up.
  • I am keeping a food journal. I have tried before and quit after a short time. Keeping a journal also prevents you from popping food into your mouth. I will look into apps. Anyone have a suggestion? I am new to apps:)
  • I will be easy on myself. I will continue to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of wine at night!

This morning, I made scrambled eggs from the farmer’s market with organic mozzarella cheese over a bed of greens. I had a lovely cup of organic coffee with half and half. I took my high quality supplements along with A-ma-ta. (NEWS FLASH! I AM OFF THE BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES! MORE ON THAT IN ANOTHER POST.)

George the dog and I went to the park. We ran/walked and then a 9 minute workout. This is a before shot. We were not quite as pretty when we finished.

Jump start your morning walk!

We are streamlining OutdoorFit into 2 amazing workouts a week during the summer months. Wednesdays and Fridays 7:30 AM.

I have been working on what I need to do to keep in shape without doing too much. I want my body to be strong, vibrant and healthy. I don’t want to deal with overuse issues.

Yesterday morning, I dropped Thomas off at Dorbrook park for camp. Dorbrook has a beautiful 2 mile trail that George the dog and I like to walk. I decided to up my walk with a run/walk. I run until my body feels like I have had enough and then I walk. This is something new for me. I was a competitive runner and I know how to train hard. I am learning how to pay attention to my body. Long Runs no longer serve me. I am writing that out so hopefully I am listening!

My morning run/walk also included a 9 minute strength, cardio full body workout. Yes, only 9 minutes! I stopped at a picnic bench on the trail for George to lay down  in the shade.

Here is my workout:

30 second rounds.

Total Body Extensions

Push-ups

Squats

Jumping Jacks

Knee to elbow

Alt. reverse lunge

Rest one minute and complete 2 more rounds.

BONUS ROUND…after final set 10 burpees just to make it a great day!

I did a total of 45 push-ups, 45 squats etc. within the 9 minute workout! You can achieve a lot in a short period of time. Try it!

George the dog and I completed the 2 mile trail with a run/walk. People do like to stop us because George is so handsome.

Optimal Health= A low-glycemic diet, exercise and high quality supplements!

Low-glycemic eating keeps your blood sugar stable, your hormones happy and promotes great health!I  follow a low-glycemic diet with very little grains.

Here is a typical lunch, bacon is an added bonus. I usually have left-over dinner on a bed of greens. I have been making different dressings to keep the salad interesting!

I posted last week that I started on A-MA-TA, Dr. Northrup’s new product to help with Menopause symptoms. I am slowly weaning off my bio-identical hormones and so far so good. I am also doing the healthy gut protocol to help with the process.

“This Changes Everything!”

I love the work of Dr. Christiane Northrup.

Her words of wisdom  helped me through Menopause.

The Hormone -Balancing Food Program. (from THE WISDOM OF MENOPAUSE)

  • Eat at least three meals a day. ( I eat 5…my snacks are important to me.)
  • Focus on Portion size not calories.
  • Eat Protein at each meal.
  • Eliminate the high-glycemic foods as much as possible. ( I still enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.)
  • Reduce grain products.
  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. (Mainly vegetables)
  • Enjoy healthy fats. (avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, and BUTTER!)
  • Drink lots of water. (2 cups before each meal)

Take  high quality supplements… A great multi-vitamin and fish oil.

I do all that , full disclosure here, I have been on bio-identical hormones for 6 years. I feel good on them but I would love to get off of them. I received an email today from Dr. Christiane Northrup that I wanted to share with all of you. She has created her own product line to support women through menopause and beyond. THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING! I am going to slowly wean myself off the bio-identical hormones with A-ma-ta! I will let you know.  I hope this is helpful for all of you too!

FIT AND FABULOUS…AGING OPTIONAL!
