Training for an Ultra Marathon at 57!

This was such a fun interview with my friend Dorian Meyer.  We sat on  Dorian’s beautiful porch overlooking Sandy Hook and the NYC skyline.   I have been wanting to interview her because she has such amazing energy and spirit!  I’ve known Dorian for a long time through running. She was an exceptional runner in her “day”!

During the interview, we talk about fashion, running. and her latest challenge, ultra marathoning.  At the age of 57, Dorian is training for a 50 mile Ultra Marathon!

Dorian’s last race was the NYC marathon in 2004. She stopped racing because she needed to take care of her Mom and sister who both sadly had cancer. She describes how running saved her during that time. I had the same kind of experience when Thomas, my miracle kid was in the hospital for 13 months. I would get up, run and then drive to the hospital. It saved me too. You just put one foot in front of the other.

Enjoy the interview.
Go see Dorian for new sneakers at her beautiful blue store in Shrewsbury, NJ. Shore Footed.

The Summer of Fun.

Do you love summer?

I am not a summer person. To be honest, it makes me a bit nervous. I have a sense of guilt about having FUN. I live 5 miles from the ocean and  rarely get there. I would rather stay home and weed on some level. I am working on changing.

I am inspired by Casey Neistat? Do you follow him? (I am old enough to be his Mother. I think I have seen everyone of his videos.  I love his enthusiasm and love of life.)

I watched his you Tube Video. First Day of Summer.

SO…I am making an announcement! This will be my summer of fun!

At the Jersey Shore with Ivone!

I have been to the beach twice so far! Thanks Ivone!

Coffee with Wendy!

I went shopping, bought a dress and enjoyed a cup of coffee on a bench in Red Bank with my Fashion Consultant Wendy!

I have been to a parade with my son Tom! Spent an hour having candy thrown at us. I had a piece of double bubble gum! Check out this short video of Thomas conducting the bagpipers. Lots of Fun!

I bought a new pair of sneakers! New Balance Minimus! I am so excited about them. The next blog post will be about Lighten up in so many ways starting with your Feet!

Run Faster Jump Higher:)

What are you doing for fun this summer?  Going to the beach? Taking a bike ride? A trip to Italy? I would love to hear!

Enjoy!

Love,

Mary

Did you make your bed this morning?

Martha Stewart advises, “don’t leave the house with an unmade bed.”

How many times did your Mom tell you to make your bed? How many times did you tell your kids to make their bed?

Making your bed can set you up for success in your day. You start your day off accomplishing a task.

Your bed room feels and looks less cluttered when your bed is made.

A made bed brings peace.

Your bed is where you sleep and restore for the next day. You deserve every night to be peaceful and comforting.

I like a duvet without a top sheet. It only takes a minute to make the bed and straighten the pillows. I got rid of the dust ruffle. George the dog liked to lay up against it. It was always hairy and dirty. One less thing to take care of.

A peaceful bed.

Making your bed is a great tip to reduce your cortisol levels, bring peace and it allows your body to calm down and release the excess weight. Amazing right?

Low impact Burpee!

I have a new client and every time I say burpee she leaves for a walk around the building. This is fine with me. Elaine is easing into the workouts! By the way, she is 79! Fit and Fabulous…Aging Optional!

I have a low impact burpee that she can do. It is an alternative to the high impact burpee that we all Love! It is also great to use as a warm up to your workout.

Exercise is very important to your health.

Nutrition is even more critical. 80% nutrition and 20% exercise.  Being mindful of a balanced diet is key. Eat organic when possible, watch your portions, enjoy your meals, focus on proteins, healthy fats and vegetables.

Do you need a reset or perhaps a jump start?

I have put together a 7 day program of No grains, sugar and alcohol with my friend Holistic Chef Ivone of Healthy Sage.

Fat Burning in the cold!

Do you stop working out because it is cold outside? Read on maybe I will change your mind.

I love this time of year and my outdoor workouts. I was a skier and it was fabulous!  My husband and I skied. We went on great winter vacations. It was so wonderful to ski all day and then go out for a delicious dinner including a decadent piece of mud pie. Once we had kids life got a bit complicated and we stopped.

I do miss skiing on some level.  I loved the freedom of going fast down a mountain. I don’t really want to do it anymore. I don’t miss all of the equipment and freezing on chair lifts.

I still love winter, snow and being outside. There are also great health benefits.

Did you know you burn more fat in the cold than the heat?  “There is clinical evidence that freezing temps can help you burn more fat. According to a 2014 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, contending with the cold can help encourage your body to turn white fat — the kind lurking in trouble spots like your belly and thighs — into brown fat, which helps your body burn calories. When you have more brown fat, you’re more likely to burn extra calories rather than storing them as fat.Read more here.

My outdoor workouts  are great anytime of year but winter is my favorite.  We are finished within the hour. So Perfect!

I have  a wonderful community with  a twinge of craziness! The average age is 59 1/2!!!

The Best Machine Invented.

The Best Machine invented according to Jon Kalnas, the Former 3x All American Monmouth University  Track Alum is the Human Body. This is Jon’s philosophy towards personal and athletic training. Jon is the owner of Strength Athletes and co -owner of Critical Mass. Jon trains my son Thomas along with several of his special needs buddies.

Jon and The Guys!

Jon and The Guys!

I know Jon has a passion for health and fitness. He is an amazing athlete himself. At the age of 36, Jon was training for the Olympic Trials as a shot putter. Jon has been taking the pharmaceutical grade supplements that I recommend. He knows how important it is for your cells to be nourished on an Optimal Level. He knows you can’t possibly get the nourishment you need from your food. (As an athlete it is so important to take a pharmaceutical supplement so you know you aren’t going to flunk a drug test.) So, take the best supplements you can and allow your cells to decide what they need because you are the owner of the best machine ever invented…The Human Body!

A 68 year old Track Cyclist!

We were at the USA Cycling Master’s Track National Championships in Indianapolis this summer. Women are in the minority. Obviously, in the Fit and Fabulous…Aging Optional category!

I reached out to Jo Johnson. Jo is a Multi time National Champion! She is 68 and began cycling in her early 50’s! She loves track racing. “Riding on banked tracks on a bike with NO Brakes is the thrill of track.” She takes her cycling very seriously and works with Coach Kim Geist. Jo has continued to improve each year and just LOVES IT! This year she has set new PR’s in all track events. Quite an accomplishment.

Bike with no brakes

Nutrition is very important to Jo’s success. She is focused on keeping her blood sugar balanced. So important for all of us! It is the sweet spot we need to stay in!

“Every year gets better and better!”

8 minute HIIT

Here is an eight minute HIIT (high intensity interval workout for you). I watch these workouts online , mostly demonstrated by ripped young men. I think it is important for you to know that you can do this as well.  It might not be as pretty at 60 something but I get it down and reap the benefits. I hope I inspire you to give it a try. (I messed up the squat jumps the first time around, just move for those 30 seconds, try jumping jacks:)
