Fat Burning in the cold!

Do you stop working out because it is cold outside? Read on maybe I will change your mind.

I love this time of year and my outdoor workouts. I was a skier and it was fabulous!  My husband and I skied. We went on great winter vacations. It was so wonderful to ski all day and then go out for a delicious dinner including a decadent piece of mud pie. Once we had kids life got a bit complicated and we stopped.

I do miss skiing on some level.  I loved the freedom of going fast down a mountain. I don’t really want to do it anymore. I don’t miss all of the equipment and freezing on chair lifts.

I still love winter, snow and being outside. There are also great health benefits.

Did you know you burn more fat in the cold than the heat?  “There is clinical evidence that freezing temps can help you burn more fat. According to a 2014 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, contending with the cold can help encourage your body to turn white fat — the kind lurking in trouble spots like your belly and thighs — into brown fat, which helps your body burn calories. When you have more brown fat, you’re more likely to burn extra calories rather than storing them as fat.Read more here.

My outdoor workouts  are great anytime of year but winter is my favorite.  We are finished within the hour. So Perfect!

I have  a wonderful community with  a twinge of craziness! The average age is 59 1/2!!!

I love my Fit and Fabulous Community!

I love exercising with people. I have formed wonderful connections with women. We are outside working out in all kinds of weather.

This is where my friendships have been created. I am not much of a party person. I don’t do very well with celebrations. I would much rather go for a hike in the woods! Years, back I would run road races with my family. Some of the best times!

This was a few years back. Jogging in place in a parking lot! Magic!

I always enjoy a little bit of craziness. While others were inside the gym running on treadmills. We were outside doing our high knees! To me, this is so much better!

I am still outside with my friends working out. I especially love that these women are between the ages of 40 and 78! Fit and Fabulous…Aging Optional!

Burpees, Mountain Climbers and so much more. Want to join in? Here is the link to the schedule!

I am on a Mission!

I am taking my message on the trail! I have decided I need to be brave and reach out to more people. In person! It is easy to sit behind a desk and post things but to actually go out and meet new people AND present my message is a bit terrifying.  It is important what I have to share.

I am 62 and I can do burpees, mountain climbers and push-ups. Maybe you are not quite there but you can start somewhere. You can always get stronger and do things to feel better. I am here to tell you that it is possible and to start making some small changes that will make a difference!

I am also here to tell you that middle age does not need to be about putting on weight. I have lost 4 % points of body fat in the past 6 months with ease and grace! I can help you too!

This Sunday, I will be at Fair Haven Fields. Let’s get together for a walk and a talk! We will end with a few exercises to strengthen and stretch your low back. (Foundation Training) LIFE CHANGING! Meet me by the tennis courts off Dartmouth Ave. 8 AM. If you are not local and want to reach out please contact me and let’s talk!

I will bring George on Sunday. He is always up for a walk!

Squats

Everyone of my workouts include some form of squats. Squats are a wonderful functional exercise. They strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, and quadriceps. Once you are able to perform a basic squat, you can start adding weights for even more benefit!

Sometimes it is good to go back to the basics.

http://https://youtu.be/onITv9Yaqic

Do your squat to a chair or bench.

  • Feet wide
  • Lead with your bottom
  • Butt back and down ,tap the chair with your bottom come back up
  • Chest up

Include squats into your workout!

I couldn’t do this 20 years ago.

I was a  runner 20 years ago. Pretty much on my way out. I had a strong lower body and a weak upper body.

Today at 62, I can do this.

It is possible for you too! You can start by doing push ups off the wall and then try off the counter and slowly make your way to the floor.

I don’t like them off the knees.

Here are the cues for a great push up.

  • Get into position.
  • Wrist lined up with your arm pits.
  • Back Flat
  • Squeeze your glutes and your quadriceps.
  • Suck in your belly button.

You will do a really strong push up. Push ups are great for your arms, chest and core! You can do them anytime and anywhere! There are so many fun and challenging variations if you get bored with the basics! For another post:)

Practice your Push ups!

Love,

Mary

A 68 year old Track Cyclist!

We were at the USA Cycling Master’s Track National Championships in Indianapolis this summer. Women are in the minority. Obviously, in the Fit and Fabulous…Aging Optional category!

I reached out to Jo Johnson. Jo is a Multi time National Champion! She is 68 and began cycling in her early 50’s! She loves track racing. “Riding on banked tracks on a bike with NO Brakes is the thrill of track.” She takes her cycling very seriously and works with Coach Kim Geist. Jo has continued to improve each year and just LOVES IT! This year she has set new PR’s in all track events. Quite an accomplishment.

Bike with no brakes

Nutrition is very important to Jo’s success. She is focused on keeping her blood sugar balanced. So important for all of us! It is the sweet spot we need to stay in!

“Every year gets better and better!”

The Summer of Planting Trees!

strong healthy back

This summer has been the summer of Tree planting. Finding the perfect spot, digging holes and planting the trees  is hard work. BIG NEWS~ I planted four trees this summer and no back pain!

As many of you know I have incorporated Foundation Training into my life and into my Fit and Fabulous Workouts. Something pretty incredible has happened because of this training. STRONG HEALTHY BACK!

My back is very strong even after years of running, jumping, mountain climbers and burpees.

I have been asked my age by my doctor and then was told that maybe I need to stop and take up a low impact exercise like swimming.  I found a better way.  Foundation Training. It only takes a few minutes a day.

BONUS ROUND!

I have worn orthotics for years and always wore shoes with support, even inside my house. Now, I can go barefoot with No BACK PAIN!  Thrilling!

It is not just about exercise, It is embracing a healthy lifestyle. Eating a low-glycemic diet, pharmaceutical grade supplements and exercise.

I am launching a New 28 Fit and Fabulous…Aging Optional Program.

Are you ready to be Strong, Healthy, Fit and Fabulous?

It is possible at any age!
